Family Resources of New Orleans Self Help Housing Program is where qualified individuals and families can build new homes.   Families provide "sweat equity" by working to help build their home and the homes of others in their self help group. Financing is provided through the United States Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) with low interest loans to be repaid over 33 to 38 years.

To be eligible for this program an applicant must:

  1. Be within income levels: 
    1-4 persons….$45,600
    5-8  persons…$60,200
  2. Have sufficient income to afford the cost of homeownership
  3. Have less than 41% of their income going to debt payments
  4. Have an acceptable credit history (if you have had credit problems , call the office so we can assess your situation)

Education and TrainingFamily Resources provides a (12) twelve hour homebuyer training curriculum in an effort to educate families on the homeownership process.  The workshop covers a variety of topics such as; credit rehabilitation, family budgeting, mortgage products comparison and other aspects of homeownership from beginning to end.  The classes are taught by professionals in the real estate industry.

The first step to register for classes is to call (504) 822-8519 and schedule an appointment to complete the registration packet.  Meet with a housing counselor, who will pull your credit report, analyze your credit report with you and work with you to resolve any credit issues you may have. There is a registration fee to include the credit report of $100 per person or $175 per couple to be paid by money order at the time of the appointment.

The following documents are required to register:

  • Last three year’s of tax returns to include W2’s
  • Last six paycheck stubs
  • Identification (Driver’s License, State ID, Alien Registration Card, etc.)
  • Social Security Card
  • Most recent bank statement
  • Proof of other income (SSI/Disability, Child Support, IRA, Annuity, Pension, etc.)
